Tybee Light Station

Savannah Lighthouse

The Tybee Light Station is located on Tybee Island, Georgia and is one of Americans few intact historical light stations. James Oglethorpe, founder of the Savannah colony, ordered the construction of the Tybee Lighthouse at the mouth of the Savannah River to help guide mariners safely into Savannah. Completed in 1736, it was at that time, the tallest structure in America. The Tybee Light Station was also one of the first public structures in Georgia. Unfortunately, the light station has had its fair share of misfortune. Damaged by storms, earthquakes and then burned by confederate soldiers in retreat during the civil war, the lighthouse has had to be rebuilt several times. During its service, the lighthouse has also been painted several different colors and styles. Currently the tower stands at 154 feet tall.

If you are visiting Savannah, be sure to stop by Tybee Island Light Station. After taking in the beauty of station, walk across the street and enjoy a walk on the Tybee Beach.
